SPECIAL VINTAGE SELECTION. This beautiful 1930's brocade evening bag captures a snapshot in time of life featuring Byzantine figural motifs. The Lapis Lazuli beads create a very unique, triangular pendant closure. Includes an open pocket, small mirror, and a mini matching wallet with coin purse. Vertical self-fabric handle applied to rear. Provenance: This bag belonged to Matilda Dodge Wilson, wife first of auto pioneer John Dodge, and after his death, of lumber broker Alfred G. Wilson. After John Dodge's death of influenza and the sale of Dodge Brothers Motor Car Company in 1922 she was one of the wealthiest women in the world. She and her second husband became renowned for their art collection which included Rembrandt, Anthony van Dyck, Joshua Reynolds, John Constable and Frederic Remington. She adored magnificent French couture, including Poiret and Callot Soeurs gowns, and had an extensive collection of beautiful handbags from various Parisian designers to complement them, of which this bag is an example.
