Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany & Co. was founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and Teddy Young in New York City in 1837 as a "stationery and fancy goods emporium" called Tiffany, Young and Ellis. The name was shortened to Tiffany & Co. in 1853, when Charles Tiffany took control of the store and changed its focus to jewelry.

Since then, their timeless "Blue Box" has symbolized a legendary commitment to luxury, quality and craftsmanship -- with Tiffany & Co. recognized worldwide for its creativity and authority.

Among their achievements:

The introduction of the Tiffany setting in 1886 that ushered in a new look and feel for engagement rings. This classic 6-prong solitaire was designed to maximize a diamond's beauty by raising the stone above the band and into the light - to the delight of generations of new brides.

In 1907 their chief gemologist was instrumental in establishing the metric carat as the international standard for gem weight. And in 1926, the Tiffany standard of purity for platinum was adopted by the United States government as its own standard.

Their influence extends well beyond the world of fine jewelry, even into the world of sports. In 1967 Tiffany & Co. was commissioned to create the first NFL Super Bowl Trophy - later renamed the Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy.
