Alex Woo
The daughter of a master bench jeweler - who serves as her mentor - Alex Woo creates stunning pieces of jewelry from a workshop in her native New York City. She describes her style as fashionably fresh and contemporary, yet still classic. And she draws design inspiration from all over the world.
She says, "I read fashion magazines to see what the new colors and styles are, what is on the cutting edge... however travel and the study of different architectural styles, the essence of a city... I assimilate all that in my mind, then synthesize it into my designs.
"I am most creative when I can get away from the process... to the mountains of Rio de Janiero, a zen garden in Kyoto, a market in Istanbul, or at a museum in Paris. To be creative, you have to go where your mind can relax, so you can see things and absorb things. You have to feel the freedom to create. If I let my mind relax, let my mind absorb all the trends and information I've seen... all of a sudden I'll get a fabulous idea."
And fabulous ideas she does have! A panel of experts from the JCK Show Design Center named her one of the Rising Stars for 2006 - one of the most prestigious and coveted accolades in the industry. Additionally, she has been named to Crain's Business's "40 Under 40" list of successful people in New York City.
