Tom Ford
Born in Austin, Texas in 1962, Tom Ford spent much of his childhood in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he graduated from Santa Fe Preparatory School. He then attended New York University and later Parsons School of Design where he earned a degree in architecture.
Following design jobs with Cathy Hardwick and Perry Ellis, where he worked under designer Marc Jacobs, he was hired in 1990 by Gucci as Womenswear Designer. Within four years he was named Creative Director, responsible for the design of all product lines, and for the company's corporate image, advertising campaigns and store design. During his tenure at Gucci, Ford was credited with bringing a new level of glamour to the brand, introducing velvet hipsters, skinny satin shirts and car-finish metallic patent boots and more. During his decade as Creative Director annual sales increased by more than ten-fold, to some three billion dollars.
Ford believes his energy level rather than his talent is the reason for his success. Sleeping just two or three hours per night, he admits, "There are many more talented designers than me. But I have a lot of drive and won't let it go."
What's more, he says, "I'm lucky I have mass-market tastes. When I say I like a shoe, generally thousands of people will like it."
His own label, Tom Ford, was launched in 2005. And among his most popular product lines is his eyewear collection, which counts among its fans Lindsay Lohan, Madonna, Jennifer Aniston and Sally Field.
