Alexis Bittar launched his eponymous jewelry collections in the early '90s, but the Brooklyn natives artistic flair was evident long before then. As a child, Bittar accompanied his parents to flea markets, where they collected and sold rare antiques and collectibles.
At the tender age of 10, Bittar showed his entrepreneurial spirit by selling flowers from a hand-painted cart across the street from his house. At age 20 he launched his first line of jewelry using depression-era glass from the 1920s with tiny hand-cut chandelier parts - selling them on the corner of Prince and Greene Streets in SoHo.
Just two years later, he began designing two lines of jewelry that would become "signatures" of his. One was made of hand-sculpted Lucite, inspired by the Bakelite jewelry from the 1930s. A second line used Italian glass from the early 1900s, combining sculpture and reflections of light for a modern twist.
In 2002 his creative reputation garnered him an invitation from Patricia Fields, costume designer for Sex and the City, to create designs for the television series. He was further honored in 2005 when invited to become a member in the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
